Hedin’s expedition report of his travels across the Persian desert from October 1905 to June 1906. Hedin traveled east of Tehran to explore the 500 kilometer expanse of salty desert, known as the Kavir Desert. Hedin discovered during his exploration of the region that the desert’s great salt water lake was formed by the buildup of salt sediments resulting from rapid evaporation in the high temperatures.
Vol.1: Hedin’s scholarly expedition report of his Persia expedition. Starting off in Varamin, the expedition crossed the Kavir Desert arriving in Alem. Then, crossing the desert a second time, the team traveled from Tabes and Neh to the Hamoun, in eastern Persia. The report also includes an examination of the Tehran to Mashad caravan route.
Vol. 2: Includes an explanation of the maps that accompanied the expedition report; an explanation of the meaning of various Persian names; the geology of the mountains of eastern Iran; and a general discussion of the geological aspects of the expedition.
