DEN VANDRANDE SJÖN
fyracylindriga lastbilar av 1933 bättre fördrogo den
centralasiatiska terrängen in hans åttacylindriga av
1934 års modell. Om något vitalt missöde drabbat
denna vagn under vår färd till Lopdepressionen, så
hade vi nödgats att lämna den kvar för evigt. På hem-
vägen från Anhsi till Sian spelade den oss visserligen
flera otrevliga spratt, men den kom dock helskinnad
till Peking och fick på senhösten 1935 äran att deltaga
i den engelska ambassadsekreterarens Sir Eric Teich-
mans bilfärd i våra spår genom Gobi till Hami och
vidare över Ku-ch'eng-tse, Urumtji och Korla till
Kaschgar. Sir Eric finner liksom vi Fords vagnar
"strong, fast, powerful, and reliable" och tillägger: "Only the strongest machines will stand the strain of Gobi travel — and the nature of some of the ground that has to be crossed must be seen to be believed."
Den 425 mil långa vägen från Sui-yuan till Kasch-
gar krävde 38 dagar. Vid starten hade Sir Eric Teich-
man, liksom vi och så många andra gobiresande, ovär-
derlig hjälp av Georg Söderbom. Om det samband vår
bilfärd av 1933-35 hade med Teichmans av hösten
1935 säger den senare:
"My transport consisted of two Ford trucks, one new and one old, the latter having already done some thousands of miles of expedition work of Dr. Sven Hedin the year before. The old truck suffered several mechanical breakdowns and had eventually to be abandoned Soo miles short of Kashgar; the new one reached the end of the journey in perfect condition, and had the distinction of being the first motor vehicle to be driven through from the Chinese border to Kashgar. The moral is that only new machinery is good enough to stand
