EDITORIAL REMARKS

BY FOLKE BERGMAN

Dr HEDIN has in his preface already described how this work originated. For the sake of completeness it may be added that parts I and II are here translated afresh, with the exception of the chapter on Jehol in part II, which in a thoroughly revised form has been grafted onto the present work from the English edition of Jehol, City of Emperors. Part III is based upon the English editions of The Silk Road, Big Horse's Flight and The Wandering Lake. Here, too, however, the translator, Mr DONALD BURTON, has gone through the text and brought it more nearly into line with the newly translated manuscript.

I will take this opportunity of expressing to my friend DON BURTON my warm thanks for his great willingness to discuss in detail all doubtful questions.

The notes that I have added might easily have been multiplied, but this would have upset the balance of the work. Some of them, too, might as easily have been omitted.

It remains to say a few words about the transcription of the place-names and names of persons, a matter that has sometimes given rise to considerable difficulties and even occasionally proved impossible to resolve with complete correctness or consistency.

For the Chinese names a slightly simplified form of WADE's well-known system has been used. Forms of such long standing as `Peking' and `Sinkiang' etc. have been retained. As regards the names of persons, where the private transcription of the owner has been known this has been used (as in the case of Professor Siv, whose family name would otherwise have been written Hsv). Professor BERNHARD KARLGREN has given me many valuable hints.

For Turki and Russian names the Royal Geographical Society's Alphabets of Foreign Languages has been consulted, in which connection Dr GUNNAR JARRING, Lund, Dr KAARE GRSNBZCH, Copenhagen, and Professor KNUT KNUTSSON, Stockholm, have placed their special knowledge at my disposal.

As to the transcription of Mongol names I have had the privilege of using a system created by Dr GRßNBECH. Unfortunately we have not been able to discuss
