who prevented my journey to the citadel of lamaism, which is twice mentioned in his report to the emperor. Dr YUAN had procured me a copy of this report earlier in the year. When I now asked him why he had prevented my journey he side-stepped the question and replied with an empty phrase.

BOHLIN LEAVES

When BoHLIN had finished the distribution and re-packing of his palaeontological collections and handed over to BERGMAN the archaeological finds he had made, he returned to Sweden via Suez, leaving on April 27th. He had then been in China for over six years.

MOVING TO A NEW HOUSE

As our quarters in Hsi-kuan-yin-ssu were not in all respects ideal, and could not house all the members of the expedition, we began hunting in the spring for a bigger Chinese compound. We found a delightful place in the west city, between Nan-chang-chieh and Tung-ho-yen, just near the wall of the Central Park. It really consisted of two adjacent compounds. We moved into these new quarters during the first days of May. I got a house and courtyard for myself, and the BERGMANS and Miss LESSING another. Other houses contained dining-room and sitting-room for common use, and each of these faced out on its own courtyard. There were so many smaller houses and courtyards that one at first almost risked losing one's way. A more idyllic and delightful dwelling-place than this real Chinese house could hardly be imagined, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. (Plate 6o). Mrs BERGMAN was the hostess of the little Swedish colony that the expedition formed in Peking.

RETURN OF HÖRNER AND CHEN

The heat began to be quite tropical at the time of our move, and on May 8th it was simply sweltering. On this day HÖRNER and CHEN arrived from the Edsengol and their desert solitudes. Their nearly four years' wanderings on the Edsengol and Lop-nor, in the Pei-shan and the Nan-shan had yielded splendid results. Among other things, they had made a great discovery — the new Lake Lop-nor formed in 1921.1

1 HÖRNER has since published an extraordinarily interesting book about his and CHEN's experiences and adventures, »Resa till Lop », Stockholm 1936.
