Fig. 22. Plan of the Golden Pavilion of the Potala in Jehol

On August loth the first rows of gilded shingles were put on the roof. About 600 shingles were laid every day. By September 2nd the south-west side of the upper roof was completely covered with shingles; and a week later the golden finial, a small stu/a symbolizing the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether, was in its place, crowning the temple.

By August gth the temple was practically finished, as far as the work of the contractors and carpenters was concerned; and we therefore had a little gathering with the workers — all but one of whom were Swedes — who had completed their task in such a careful, honest and skilful way.

The decoration of the temple was done by two Chinese artists who arrived in Chicago from Peking on August 4th. They worked out the stencil designs and colour schemes in collaboration with an American decorator.

The genuine mineral paints that were used for the whole temple had been brought over in powder form from China, and will keep bright for many years. The building itself is designed for permanence.

The thirty-six Lohans or Disciples of Buddha, artistically executed by Chinese painters, together with several hundred small painted panels, were now installed. These latter comprised the ceiling of the interior and also the external loggia.

The whole temple was also made waterproof according to modern principles.
