Results of the Royal Prussian Turfan-Expedition
Description
Record of items collected by the four German expeditions to Central Asia. The German expeditions were organized between 1902 and 1914. The first expedition was led by Albert Grünwedel, a specialist in Indian studies, and surveyed various areas in Khocho, Sangim and Murtuq. The second expedition was joined by Albert von le Coq, and principally carried out excavations around the Turfan Oasis. The third expedition also conducted excavations in Turfan and also in Kucha, Kumtura, Kizil and Kharashahr. The fourth expedition implemented thorough studies of the area around Kucha, and also visited Achik-ilek, Subash and Tumschuq near Maralbashi.
Vol. 1: Statues. Consists of Gandhara and East Turkistan sculpting techniques, history of Turfan expeditions, yearly charts, diagrams and explanations. Tafell 1-45
Vol.2 Manichaean Miniatures. Records the spread of Manichaeism, a biography of Mani, Mani and his art and writings, types of documents, techniques for miniatures, the place of Manichaeism miniatures in the history of art, and locations of art finds including Chotscho, Yarhoto, Toyuk, Murtuq and the Sangim Valley. Vol 3. Wall paintings. Discussion of wall paintings techniques, circumstances of discovery, structure of rock cave temples, location of paintings and painting style at the Kizil Caves, Kumtura Caves and Bezeklik grottoes. Tafel1-26.
Vol 4. Explanations of Wall paintings, Turfan. Explanation of wall paintings removed and taken back to Germany by the Turfan expedition from the Kyzyl caves, Kumtura caves and Bezeklik grottoes. Tafell -14.
Vol 5. Newly collected items. Lists statues, wooden panel paintings and wall paintings discovered and collected by the Turfan expedition from Tumschuq, Kyzyl, Schor-tschuq, Kumtura, Kirisch Simsim, Chotscho, Bezeklik and Turfan.
