From the Sanskr. mahisha-asura, or mahishasura. The Asuras are the demons of Hindû mythology, and were placed by the myth in the hot southern land amidst the Dravida people' the enemies of the northern Ilindûs. Mahisha was one of these demons (properly=buffalo).
