In this form the name derived from the Sanskrit Raj amandira, or ltajamandara, "would signify

The proper Sanskrit name was, according to sonie philologists, R aj a p e r a, king's town. Others consider the name to be a contraction of Raj amahéndri, the city of Great Indra. the king of Rajasthan. See Rajputana.

The Rajpûts, a branch of the Kshatriyas, are now one of the most numerous tribes of Hindes. Originally the kings had to be chosen from the caste of the Kshatriyas. Other names of this province are: Raj-vara, Raja-sthan.
