French diplomat and Chinese scholar. Devaria was dispatched to China by the French Foreign Office as a probationary interpreter and he remained in China for 20 years. He mainly is known for his studies of Chinese language, culture and history in remote regions. One of his great accomplishments was the identification of one of the 6 scripts found inscribed on a wall at Juyongguan, one of the passes of the Great Wall. Scholars had long been puzzled by the 6th script and it was Deveria who successfully identified the language as Tangut. He is known in China as a scholar of Islam and Manichaeism. | |
