1-Background: The historical city of Bam is situated along the historical roads that connect India to Persia and the Silk Roads. It is located in the Province of Kerman, and it once flourished for its production of silk and cotton. The city is well known by its qanat water management and distribution system, mud brick citadel, and date palm trees. An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale occurred at 5:28 on the morning of Friday 26 December 2003 (5th of Dey 1382 in the Persian calendar) and destroyed many of its quarters. The historical Citadel of Bam was destroyed, and many lives were lost. The citadel as well as other sites in the city was registered as UNESCO world heritage site in danger in 2004 (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1208). As part of the Digital Silk Roads project of National Institute of Informatics, a virtual three-dimensional reconstitution of the heritage site, especially the Citadel of Bam, was proposed in 2004. Virtual reconstruction of this heritage site is essential because of the daunting complexity of physical reconstruction. The steps of the project are summarized as follows: • Collect data including photos, drawings, maps, videos and documents related to Bam from diverse and sparse resources. • Conduct analytic and comparative research on this heterogeneous data, as well as categorization and annotation to complete the basic resources for CG modeling. • Develop a 3DCG model of buildings inside the citadel using complementary applications of diverse data resources using state-of-the-art techniques and tools. • Add semantics to the 3D models through a systematic modeling process and layer management. • Devise a virtual reality demonstration of the simulated spaces by importing a .VRML file of the 3D models into VR tools and set up a virtual walkthrough of the digitally restored buildings. 2-Collaborators and Phases: The project started with collaboration of the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicraft and Tourism Organization in 2005 for the support of basic input data and local surveys in Citadel of Bam and Bam city. The first phase of the virtual reconstruction involved groups from the National Institute of Informatics (NII) and Waseda University,Global Information and Telecommunication Institute in Japan. The 3DCG reconstruction of the entrance and bazaar was started by a team from the Waseda University in 2005. A team from the University of Tehran and Razahang Architectural Firm joined in September 2005 for the 3DCG reconstruction of five major buildings and additional support of measurements in the Citadel. Espace Virtuel de Conception Architecturale et Urbaine (EVCAU), a laboratory of the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de Paris Val-de Seine (ENSAPVS) in France, joined the project in October 2006

they helped to introduce different techniques of the 3DCG modeling and 3DCG reconstruction of two case studies, the caravanserai and school inside the citadel. The second phase of the project started with developing a Three-dimensional basic drawing by gradual application of heterogeneous resources to be used as major reference for 3DCG reconstruction. The focus of the second phase was the Governor District of the Citadel of Bam (consisting of the "Governor’s House", "watch tower", "area surrounding the Chahar Fasl Edifice", "deep water well", "governor’s bath", "Commander's House", "wind mill", "Old Gate", "second gate", "second defensive wall", "third defensive wall", "forth defensive wall", alley between second gate and Governor's House" and part of city wall) The team from University of Tehran and Razahang Architectural Firm developed the 3DCG reconstruction of Governor's District and the above mentioned cases inside the Citadel of Bam. 3-Virtual Reality: A virtual reality demonstration of the 3D reconstructed buildings was provided by the team of Waseda University, Global Information and Telecommunication Institute. It enables walkthrough inside the virtual 3D recontructed Citadel of Bam. 4-Advanced Ontology-Based Website: The results of the virtual 3D reconstruction of the Citadel of Bam or outcomes, the references, the research activity, the historical and typological description of the Citadel and the research team were provided and introduced by desing of an advanced knowledge-base and its implementation in an ontology-based website (http://dsr.nii.ac.jp/Bam3DCG/) by Digital Silk Road project of National Institute of Informatics for the access of users over the world through internet.
