The Mogao Grottoes are divided into two sections, the north and the south. The north section, about 700 meters wide, has approximately 250 caves, which constitute four or five layers, resulting in the whole structure looking like a honey comb. Most of the caves are tiny and contain no murals and statutes. Recent excavation has revealed that the caves were living and training quarters for Buddhist monks.
