ويصبغونه بالحُمرَة والصفرة ويصنع بها ثياب قطن حسان
تنسب اليها واهلها ستّابون يبغضون العشرة ومن العجب انهم
لا يذكرون لفظ العشرة وينادى سماسرتهم بالاسواق على السلع
فاذا بلغوا الى العشرة قالوا تسعة وواحدا وحضرّبها بعض
الادراك يوما فسمع سمسارا ينادى تسعة وواحدا فضربه بالدّبّوس
على راسه وقال قُل عشرة بالدبّوس وبها مسجد جامع فيه تسع
قباب ولم يجعلوها عشرة قياما بمذهبهم القبيح ثمّ سرنا الى
مدينة حَلَب المدينة الكُبرى، والقاعدة العُظمى، قال ابو الحسين
ابن جُبَير في وصفها قدرها خطير، وذكرها في كلّ زمان بطير،
خطابها من الملوك كثير، وكلّها من النفوس اثير، فكم

nom de cette ville. Ses habitants sont satiriques et ils dé-
testent les dix premiers apôtres de Mahomet; et, chose sur-
prenante! ils ne mentionnent jamais le mot dix. Quand leurs
courtiers crient dans les places les marchandises à l'encan,
et qu'ils en viennent au nombre dix, ils prononcent neuf
plus un. Un certain Turc (mamloûc), se trouvant un jour
dans Sermin, entendit un courtier annoncer neuf et un. Alors
il le frappa sur la tête avec sa masse d'armes, en disant :
« Prononce dix et la massue. »
Sermin possède une mosquée djâmi, où il y a neuf cou-
poles; et ces gens n'en ont point fait dix, par persistance
dans leur superstition méprisable.
De Sermin, nous nous rendîmes à la ville de Haleb (Alep),
la ville grande et la métropole magnifique. Voici ce que dit
Abou'lhoçain, fils de Djobeïr, en la décrivant : « Le mérite
de cette ville est immense, et sa renommée aura cours en
tout temps. Sa possession a souvent été recherchée par les
rois, et son rang a fait impression sur les hommes. Combien
