صِبَافَة الكَافِر وبَحر الصين لا يُسَافَر فيه الَّا بمراكب الصين
ولنذكر ترتيبها ،
ذكر مراكب الصين ومراكب الصين ثلاثة اصناف اَلكبار
منها تسمَّى الجنوك واحدها جنك بجم معقود مضموم ونون
ساكن والمتوسطة تسمَّى الزو بفتح الزاى وواو والصغار يسمَّى
احدها اَلكم بكافين مفتوحين ويكون في المركب الكبير منها
اثنى عشر قلعًا فما دونها الى ثلاثة وقلاعها من قضبان الخيزران
منسوجة كالحُصُر لا تُحَطُّ ابدًا ويديرونها بحسب دَوَران الريح
واذا ارسوا تركوها واقفة في مهبِّ الريح ويخدم في المركب منها
الف رجل منهم البحرية ستمائة ومنهم اربعمائة من المقاتلة

DESCRIPTION DES VAISSEAUX DE LA CHINE.
Il y en a trois espèces : 1° les grands, qui sont appelés
gonoûk et au singulier gonk « jonque (du chinois tchouen) ; »
2° les moyens, nommés zaou (sao ou seou), et 3° les petits
nommés cacam (hoa-hang). Il y a sur un de ces grands na-
vires douze voiles et au-dessous, jusqu'à trois. Leurs voiles
sont faites de baguettes de bambous, tissées en guise de
nattes; on ne les amène jamais, et on les change de direc-
tion, selon que le vent souffle d'un côté ou d'un autre.
Quand ces navires jettent l'ancre, on laisse flotter les voiles
au vent. Chacun d'eux est manœuvré par mille hommes, sa-
voir : six cents marins et quatre cents guerriers, parmi les-
