Sino-Siberian Art : vol.1 |

nevertheless lacks both drawing and accents. The principal motive is that of a
serpent coiled into an irregular S-shape. Besides the usual loop it has also the
belt-plaque hook. Between the body and the end of the tail is a stylised
hedgehog. This vigourous yet barbarous piece forms part of the end of our
art and is of the beginning of the II millennium.
Concerning Plate XXX no. 10 the use and the way in which the object was
placed are uncertain. Our reason for placing this piece under the above head-
ing is that the loop can only be understood in a vertical position. It is formed of
the forequarters of a fabulous being. Two animal-heads (perhaps of lynx) are in
a horizontal position. They have rings on either side of them followed by
squares decorated with crosses. On the whole this example suggests a period
at the beginning of the II millennium.
As we have seen, the buckle used to end a chain has only in one case an orna-
mental connection with Siberia (Plate XXX no. 1); all the other examples serve
to enrich the repertory of forms with local inventions.
