Today we are searching everywhere for the first awkwardnesses, the phase
of youth. We must not forget that there are later awkwardnesses, the youth of
old age, which at times may attain the strength of the beginning. Thus phases
in the development of the Sino-Siberian animal style deserve a place in the art
of the Far East, as aesthetic as well as historical documents.
