Fa-hien includes the whole mountainous region down to the Himalaya, in the *Ts'ung-ling*.
On his little sketch-map Legge has drawn the pilgrims' route from *Khotan* directly to
Skardo, disregarding those places which were not with certainty identified.
Legge locates the *Ts'ung-ling* with the following words:
The Ts'ung, or Onion range, called also the Belurtagh mountains, including the Kara-korum,
and forming together the connecting links between the more northern T'ien-shan and the Kwen-lun
mountains on the north of Tibet.¹
Ritter states that in Fa-hien's days roads existed over the *Ts'ung-ling* mountains,
the latter including ramifications from the Hindu-kush and Kashmir Himalaya. He believes
that Fa-hien travelled across the *Pamirs* and then through the mountains in the direction
of *Jellalabad*.²
Klaproth identifies *Tzu-ho* (Tseu-hô) with *Kök-yar* and thinks that Fa-hien, when
travelling from that place to Kashmir ought to have traversed the upper branch of the
Indus, which comes from Tibet.³ According to him the road followed by Fa-hien and his
comrades was the same as the one which is still in use from *Yarkand* over the *Kara-korum
Pass* to Western Tibet. He gives the following interesting analysis of the road:
Klaproth thus places the sources of Kara-su in the *Ts'ung-ling*, identifying this
system with the *Kara-korum*. *Chich-ch'a* (Kie-tchha) he places in or near *Baltistan*. Abel
Rémusat is of the same opinion, though he regards the *Ts'ung-ling* as a meridional range:
