the same as the *Ling-shan* 凌山 or Ice-Mountain of Hsüan-chuang and the geographical descriptions of the T'ang period.¹ North of it is the *Ch'ing-ch'ih* 清池 or Clear Lake (Issik-köl).

BEAL has made his translation in accordance with HUI-LI's 慧立 account in the Life of Hsüan-chuang:

»This (Ling-shan) is, in fact, the northern plateau of the *Ts'ung-ling* range, and from this point the waters mostly have an eastern flow.» ² But he says it may as well be rendered: »this is (or, these mountains are) to the north of the *T'sung-ling's*.» ² The latter version of Beal is the same as Stanislas Julien's, which excludes the western Tien-shan from the Ts'ung-ling system.³ But the first version of Beal saying that the Ling-shan represents the northern plateau of the Ts'ung-ling range, is corroborated by Hsüan-chuang when he speaks of *Su-tu-li-sé-na*, which the Arabian geography knows as Sutrushna and places between Ferghana and Samarkand:

He also gives the situation of the system in relation to *T'u-ho-lo* or Tokharistan:

Here the *Ts'ung-ling* must be identified with the whole block of mountains situated east of the eastern parts of Bokhara and N. E. parts of Afghanistan, thus including the Pamirs and the ranges south of them. The »*Snowy mountains*» seem to be the Hindu-kush. The kingdom of *K'o-to-lo*, Khotl or Khottal, is said to be west of the mountains:

Of the latter, the country of the Comedae of Ptolemy, or Darwaz, it is said:
