Ritter accepts the view that the Dragon Lake is identical with the Kara-köl¹:
In vain Ritter looks for an outflow from the lake to the west on Al. Burnes' and Klaproth's maps; only to the east flows the river Yamanyar. At another place Ritter, speaking of the source of the Tarim, expresses the same hydrographical problem thus:
Further Ritter explains how the Yaman-yar is the upper course of the Kashgar-darya. The western outflow is more difficult to explain:
Humboldt makes a critical comparison between the narratives of Sung Yün, Hsüan-chuang, Marco Polo and Wood, and is in doubt which of the Pamir lakes should be identified with the Dragon Lake of Chinese pilgrims:
If it were possible to solve the hydrographical problem, and with certainty tell which lake the pilgrim means, we should at once get the most important starting point in both directions, and we should be able to draw, approximately, the whole itinerary of Hsüan-chuang. The case with the mountains is quite different. He always speaks of high mountains, and we do not know which particular mountains he means. Ts'ung-ling is a very loose appellation. Such names as Pamir and Bolor do not help us. Only hydrographical
