same time he admits that Fa-hien's Ts'ung-ling, situated four days south of *Tzu-ho*, must
be meant as a special pass, though later on in the pilgrim's narrative the whole mountainous
country to the very *Himalaya* is designated with the same name.
In a few cases Richthofen finds the word »ling«, in plural, together with a specifying
word, used as signifying a series of passes which near each other lead over a mountain
range rising above and bordering a great valley plain:
Consequently Richthofen regards the name in the Chinese, as Severtsoff,
signifying a wide orographical region, but rather in a verbal sense as belonging to passes
crossed by roads.
8. IMBAULT-HUART.
In his translation »Histoire de l'Insurrection des Tounganes sous le règne de Tao
kouang (1820—1828)«, where the *Alai* is placed in the *Ts'ung-ling* and is said to be passed
by the road from *Kashgar* to *Kokand*, Imbault-Huart gives the following definition
of the term:
9. DUTREUIL DE RHINS.
A few years later, or in 1889, Dutreuil de Rhins says that the name *Nan-shan*
is given more especially to the mountains north of *Koko-nor*. But the Chinese geographers
extend this »generic title« to all the ranges joining the Nan-shan of the Koko-nor with
the *Ts'ung-ling* of Kashgaria, across the whole of Central Asia.³ Later on he again
returns to the same question thus:
*Eastern Turkistan* is bordered to the west and S. W. by the *Ts'ung-ling*, and the
*Bolor* seems to be regarded as a part of the same system. In the following words he
approaches the problem nearer:
