Si Hia 西夏¹; plus à l'ouest, Kan tcheou 甘州 était une princi-
pauté ouigoure; enfin, quand le voyageur arrive à Koa tcheou
瓜州 et à Cha tcheou 沙州, il a dû traverser un territoire tibé-
tain; sans doute il trouve là une population essentiellement
chinoise, et le chef, qui est un membre de la famille Ts'ao, vient
avec empressement s'informer auprès de lui des nouvelles de
l'empereur; mais on voit par ce récit même que Cha tcheou
était alors séparé de la Chine par les Tibétains, les Ouigours
