Director of the Department of Literature of the Kyoto Imperial Univer-
sity from 1930 to 1932, and in 1937 being appointed to the Presidency
of the same academical institution, devoted himself for the betterment
of the state of things in the University. It is indeed a matter of great
regret for our academical world that after only a year in office, he fell
a prey to illness and was cut off in the midst of his career, thus dis-
appointing hopes of great things which we, both in and out of the
University, reposed in his efforts.
His great achievement as archaeologist is lastingly attested by his
published works numbering dozens and scores, though we confine our-
selves to the more important, among which may be mentioned "An
Outline of Archaeology", "Studies in Far Eastern Archaeology", and
"The Dawn of Civilization in the Far East", as well as many reports of
his excavations and researches. But his activity being by no means
exhausted by this, he played a leading part in the affairs of the various
commissions and academical bodies, such as the Temporary Commission
for the Investigation of Imperial Mausolea, the Commission for the Pre-
servation of National Treasures, the Commission for the Investigation
and Preservation of Important Fine Arts, the Archaeological Society,
the Far Eastern Archaeological Society, etc. Besides, it is worthy of
special notice that he rendered distinguished services for the promotion
and improvement of international cultural relations, concerning himself
with the activities of the Society for the International Cultural Relations,
the Association for the Japano-Manchurien Culture, the Japano-Swedish
Association, the Japano-Italian Association, etc. T.H.
