This part of the doab (about 20 miles east of the Indus) may be called the border land, where the sterile and sandy downs of the interior margin into the fertile tracts lining the well watered banks of the Indus. Numerous but isolated groups of trees, 50 or 60 feet in height, begin to appear, as also large fields of wheat and other cereals which are cultivated being a part of the crop. The local, however, precludes all cultivation in summer when this part of the country becomes the arena of the most violent dust storms. The soil of the foreground partaking of the composite character of the region is that mixed with the sand of the downs represented above, which are seen as linear belts in the distance.
