This range, which is extremely irregular in its outline, forms the westward flank of the Nilgiris with a very steep slope towards the Malabar coast. It attains in its higher parts an elevation of from 5,000 to 6,000 English feet. The wide pass to Kálhát, the Kunda or Segúry (but 4,915 feet high), leads over the mountains, stretching away to the left of the observer, in the far distance. The small lake in the centre, with a native bazar close to its shores, is an artificial one, only three miles in circumference. The soil in the foreground is hard laterite covered, for the most part, with low jungle occasionally interspersed with ferns, from 40 to 60 feet high.
