approfondi du stûpa avant d'aborder la traduction de cet innocent
paragraphe. Mais si l'observation des ruines a pu nous faciliter
l'intelligence du texte, celui-ci nous fournit à son tour, pour chaque
partie du stûpa, les termes techniques indigènes qui nous faisaient
à peu près défaut. Toute cette terminologie sanskrite parachève
enfin la démonstration d'un fait nullement contesté, mais qu'il im-
portait néanmoins, à notre point de vue, de vérifier. Quel que
puisse être le caractère plus ou moins exotique des sculptures
qui le décorent, le stûpa bouddhique du Gandhâra est un édifice
foncièrement indien.
