s'étonnera pas que le goût indien ait, au contraire, opté pour cette
version plus merveilleuse, en même temps qu'il laisse pour compte
à l'école du Gandhâra son escabeau à trois pieds. Sur le compar-
timent inférieur d'une stèle de Sârnâth (fig. 209), nous apercevons
ainsi les deux Nâgas en train de déverser l'eau de leurs cruches sur
la tête de l'enfant. Hiuan-tsang nous dit même qu'ils «lançaient un
