encore, la place d'honneur. Selon la tradition pālie, il intervient
seul; d'après les textes du Nord, c'est lui qui prend l'initiative de
la démarche collective des dieux, lui qui, après l'échec d'Indra
et le sien propre, revient à la charge et finit par emporter le con-
sentement du Buddha. Sa place seule pourrait à la rigueur suffire,
