until they become merged in the northern shore-line of the lake. Thus instead of a delta, it forms a typical estuary.
During the latter half of the day's paddle we had to contend against a headwind, which made the water in the river-mouth quite lumpy. For this reason we kept close to the right bank. Here we were unable to detect any movement on the surface of the stream; the current was lost partly in consequence of the very great breadth, and partly in consequence of the depth, which even close to the bank was 2 m. and more, and in the middle of the stream was even greater.
