Received an Order from the Emperor, and was Dispatched by the Russian Survey Committee for Central and East Asia, which was Under the Emperor's Patronage: Primary Summary Report |
Description |
A summary report of the first survey (1909-10) of the Russian Turfan expedition organized by Oldenburg. However, since the official report that was intended for later publication was never actually completed, this summary report is the only report of the Russian group’s first survey. The first survey was considered a surveillance survey for later, more in-depth research. Before departing, Oldenburg sought advice from Grünwedel and Pelliot who had finished their explorations of the region. As well as Oldenburg, who was the head of the survey team, the team also included painter and photographer Dudin and surveying specialist Smirnoff. The team surveyed Karashahr (Shikshin), Turfan (ancient city of Jiaohe, ancient city of Gaochang, Astana, Sangim Agiz) and Kucha (Subash, Sim-sim, Kizil, Kumtura). The report includes photographs and plans of ruins. |
