Europen photographer. Beato was born in 1832 on the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea. Because Corfu at that time was a British protectorate this which qualified him for British citizenship. However, due to the fact that he is of Italian heritage, he is also known as "Signor Beato." In addition to his importance as a progenitor of battlefield photojournalism, he was also a pioneer photographer who introduced the Orient to Europe. He is known for adopting panorama shots and incoporatng hand color engraving techniques into photography. After reporting on the Crimean War (1854-56) and the Indian Rebellion (the First War of Indian Independence, 1857), he was dispatched to China to shoot photos of British and French Armies during the Second Opium War. He achieved fame by his photographs documenting the brutality which occurred right after the Taku Forts bombardment in Tianjin. He then went on to Japan at the end of the Edo era and stayed in Yokohama until 1877, after the Meiji Restoration. He left many valuable portraits of the samurai and the Tokaido Road. . Photographer Antonio Beato, who was active in Egypt, was his brother. | |
