Swedish archaeologist. Bergman participated in the Sino-Swedish Northwest China Scientific Inspection Team led by Sven Hedin and was part of the famous expedition team that discovered Lop Nor in 1934 and found the cluster of burial mounds at Kroraina (Loulan), which was later given the name of Xiaohe. Bergman’sgreatest achievement was his 1930-31 excavation survey in the Etsin-gol (Juyan) Region. The expedition discovered a large volume of Han Dynasty manuscripts on wooden strips from three sites around Khara-khoto (Heishuicheng), including Boluosongzhi, Pochengzi and Dawan. He had tremendous promise as an archaeologist, but unfortunately died at an early age. As he had already finished analyzing and categorizing the materials he found, those materials were able to make a great contribution to later research. | |
