20 ELPHINSTONE AND NIACARTNEV ON THE SOURCE OF THE INDUS.
How uncertain he really was regarding the situation of the source of the Indus
I
can be seen from the following note : »It is possible that the streams which are
said to issue from the lake Mansaroor to the south of the river of Ladauk, may be the main stream of the Indus.» There can be little doubt that this passage was written before Elphinstone knew the results of Moorcroft's journey in 18I2. But it may be a confusion with the Satlej, which really issued (about 1 Soo) from the Manasarovar, and is situated south of the Indus.
