YXII STOPPED BY THE SALT DESERT 253

After an hour's wandering over unstable ground we

i I   landed on solid ground covered with gravel, where camels

were grazing among close-growing shrubs. Just as we

were pitching the tents for the night, drizzling rain began

rip   as on the previous day, and the evening was gloomy and

r4   dark. To the west shone a camp fire, where no doubt

4;   the herdsmen who tended the camels were resting. The

éi   height was 2454 feet.

kj   Some loose material met with on the day's march

III!   consisted of remarkably fine fossilized coral.
