358 OVERLAND TO INDIA CHAP. XXX
I have to smoke all the time to be able to read the compass
and watch, but with my notes I have not much difficulty,
owing to a method which has no other drawback except
that it requires much paper. Now it is four o'clock ;
yesterday it was still quite dark at half- past five !
Patience ! I hum and whistle to pass the time, and
next time I look at the watch it is only five minutes past
four !
