ON the morning of the 4th of September, I was ready to take the field again. The five weeks of refreshing rest at Kashgar had passed so fast that there seemed at the end scarcely time enough for the completion of the multifarious preparations that my journey eastwards demanded. My start for Khanui, where ancient remains had been reported, was a move of distinct practical utility. It gave me an opportunity for a kind of experimental mobilisation of my caravan.
