[Photo] 20 No.863 北京:装飾的な門のある道は中国の都市のみならず、小さな村や田舎にも夥しくある。これらの建造物は牌楼といい、この門の銘文によれば、亡き貞節な未亡人あるいは処女「婦」を顕彰する記念物として建てられた。「浙江省の有名な海港、寧波にはすべて石材で壮麗な建築の、このようなモニュメントでおもに成り立っている長い街路がある。この彫刻の美しさはこれを見た全てのヨーロッパ人の感嘆を呼び起こした。1842年にイギリス人が寧波を占領した際、これらの凱旋門を持ち去ってロンドンに完全な中国街をつくろうという話がもちあがった。」 「エルギン卿の大理石」にまつわる歴史を記憶にとどめている方は、イギリス人の奇行に関する神父の皮肉な意見を信用することに躊躇しないであろう。No.863 PEKIN.
