For a long time I struggled to reach the top, but the sides were of loose shale and very precipitous. peaks which had been fixed. The men with Leno on the opposite side of the valley, many miles distant, had been told to keep a good look-out for me, and so well did they carry out this order that before the pillar at my hill station was complete, it was used as a point in Leno's observations. Next day the theodolite was with great labour carried to this new station, and careful observations were made, which completed the geodetic measurements at this camp.
