and social questions, and he possessed extraordinarily comprehensive erudition, not only in Chinese but also in Occidental spheres of knowledge. In his society one took part in a veritable feast of wit, and his supply of quips and whimsicalities was inexhaustible. For me personally, who had known Dr TING in former days, it was now a great pleasure and a real gain to see him once more, and to find in him a faithful ally and an indefatigable support in the difficult times that were approaching. The news of his death, ten years later, was a source of deep grief to me, though I had the melancholy consolation of being invited by his countrymen to write a memorial to my friend in the book that was written and dedicated to his memory. In him China lost one of her finest sons, and I a real and faithful friend.

I have already briefly mentioned the members of the diplomatic corps in whose homes, especially during my stay in Peking, I enjoyed the greatest hospitality and sympathy — this applies particularly to members of the Swedish and German, Norwegian and Danish, British and American Legations.
