is a cubical building with simple glazed tiles, and its façade is ornamented with niches, all designed in straight lines and angles, not the round arches that are otherwise so common in Islamic architecture. Inside the mosque are a number of sarcophagi of plastered brick.

At the side of the mausoleum are two enormous prayer-halls whose roofs are supported on round wooden columns. Pulpits and prayer-niches all face Mecca.

By the waysides run aryks or irrigation canals, and here grow willows, Lombardy poplars and mulberry trees. One of these willows was peculiar. It proceeded from one root but divided into nine trunks, twisting and winding over the ground and built into a couple of small mud houses. They were called »The Nine Dragons ».

THE CURRENCY

We came here into touch with Sinkiang's curious currency. The current medium of payment consists almost exclusively of notes, the »Sinkiang hang », which are printed in Urumchi and exist in only one value of one hang. The Chinese cash with square hole in the middle are also current, and occasionally one sees a yambaul, i. e. a boat-shaped silver piece worth fifty hang. The Chinese silver dollars that are in circulation are sought after by merchants, for the paper money is not valid outside of the province. When we sold silver dollars we got only 21/2 hang in paper, but if we bought dollars we had to pay 31/2 hang.

For our Mongols, who were about to return to their homes, we needed two thousand silver dollars, which sum we finally got together with the help of Yoi,BARS KHAN at the high price of 31/2 Jiang.

HUMIVEL's PRACTICE

None of us had so much to do, during our stay in Hami, as Dr Hu MEL. All day sick people were coming in for treatment and medicine. The postmaster's little daughter underwent a successful operation. He also visited many of the patients in their homes, as for instance SHAH MAQSUD'S son, the burgomaster, General LIU and others. The latter asked him for a remedy that might cure him of opium-smoking.
