The name of « Dagroian » is a crux, and I do not pretend to offer any solution much more probable than those of my predecessors. From Polo's account, this state ought to lie between Samudra (on the river of Pasè) and « Lambri » (about the present Achin) ; their cannibalism (although funerary) tends to show that the people were Battaks.
Phonetically, the nearest approach to « Dagroian » would be the village of .t fik Ta-lu-
man mentioned in the Ying-yai shêng-lan (cf. TP, 1915, 152; it was the name given by PHILLIPS to YULE under the wrong form u Talumangkin », Y, it, 296), but this simple little village, at the entrance of the river of Pasè, and only 10 li from the city of Samudra, cannot have been an independent kingdom. Ta-lu-man must be the corrupt 3,..r Sarhâ of Ibn Ballûlah (Fe, 439), perhaps
to be read Tarman or J.r Taruman.
Next to Samudra (Polo's « Sumatra ») on the western side, and east of Lidè, the Chinese knew,
at the beginning of the 15th cent., a country they call Na-ku-êrh (*Nagur) or E Hua-mien,
«Tattooed faces ». The name of Hua-mien occurs already in the Tao-i chih-lio of 1349-1350. All agree they must be Battaks, and they have been tentatively located towards Pedir, but they may not be on the coast (TP, 1915, 146-148, 152, 156; 1933, 290-291). It seems that these Tattooed Faces must be the kingdom of Dagroian. Indragiri, in modern corruption «Draguin», proposed by MARSDEN and hypothetically put forward again by FERRAND (JA, 1918, II, 93-94), seems to be
