rock appears in wild rocky peaks and crests. In the background to the south three glaciers are visible, surrounded by eternal snowpeaks and presenting a magnificent spectacle especially at sunset. We follow the Taghdumbash- and Hunserab Rivers to some of their uppermost sources like the branches of a tree. Taghdumbashdarya has thus a considerable drainage area; the southern boundaries we are now studying in the mountains which, under the name of Kara-korum, may be regarded partly as an eastern continuation of the Hindu-kush, and the northern boundary of which we touched in the Ulug-rabat Pass. The whole southern part of the Mustagh-ala Grou j5 falls within its boundaries and contributes, together with thousands of brooks from the Sarikol-, Kashgar- and Kara-korum Ranges to the mighty river which in the Shinde gorge pierces the Kashgar Range and flows to the junction with Raskan-darya.
