This place is said to have its name from a plant, Bombax malabarica (silk-cotton tree), frequently 'met with in this region; the native name of this plant is Sémul. Journ. As. Soc. Beng., Vol. XVIII., p. 431.

There are several rivers of this name in India, and the same denomination is bestowed on the country adjacent to the lower course of the Indus, from Lat. 23-29°.
