(;Gulmik or GuLmil. 100 houses on right bank of river. Leave river here and cross Durband Kotal, not high nor difficult in two stages to
17. Kanjud. 1,000 houses and a fort. Capital of the country, on a river which flows to Gilgit. These routes, XXX. and XXXI., probably meet about Gircha. The accounts given are inconsistent, but as very little is known of the Hanza country, every contribution to a knowledge of it is valuable.—H. T.

Yarkand to
Karghâlik Routé I.
Beshterek. 40 or 50 houses ; 4 tash.
Balerak Kurba. 200 houses, 2 tash.
Àkchik. 4 or 5 houses, 2 tash.
Takmà or Chakmà Camp, 4 tash. Kirghiz camp. Plenty of cattle.
Tupa Diwan, 4 task. Pass. Good road.
Azghan or Kilik. Plenty of wood and grass.
Kilik Diwan. Higher than Tupa Diwan.
Larcba Ya Tuba, 3 tash. Good road. Plenty of grass and wood.
Gor Jilga, 4 tash.
Mazâr Khoja, 2 tash. Large stream.
Shahidûla. (Routes I. to III.)
This road is said to be shorter and better than any other road between Yârkand and Shahidûla; grass and wood are to be found at every stage. Shahidûla can be reached by a horseman in five days from Yârkand. The man who supplied this route has tried all the roads from Yârkand and reports the road via' the Kilik Pass to be much the best for foot passengers.
