SEPULCHRAL INSCRIPTIONS FROM ASTANA CEMETERY
THE thirteen inscriptions translated below are from tombs at Astâna near Kara-khôja (see above, ii. pp. 642667). Sir Aurel Stein found it impossible to bring back the brick slabs themselves, and was obliged to content himself with photographing them and having the inscriptions copied by his Chinese assistant. Unfortunately, the majority of the photographs suffered badly in transit after development at Kara-khbja, and only four of them are sufficiently clear to be of much service. I have therefore had to rely chiefly on transcripts that are not altogether as accurate as one could wish.
