Route No. 40. •

From CH{NI (Kânâur) to S6NGNAM (Kânâur).
A principal route, passable for horses.

Chtni, 31° 31'.9; 73° 14'.31; 9,096 ft., near the right bank of the Sâtlej river —Kcishbir

(9,284 ft.) — Pass through a forest (road continues level) - Descend a steep ravine — Cross the Mâlgan river (level of the river 8,171 ft.)—Ascent of more than a mile.

Pdngi (9,197 ft.), 4 hours' march from Chilli (an

easy stage; road as far as Lipa bad)—Cross the K6zhang river — Cross the Vérang pass 1

(13,145 ft.).

The Vérang pass may be avoided and the distance divided into two marches, by following the course of the Sitlej river, viz. Pcingi—Akp a (8,450 ft.), 11 miles from Pângi— Lip a, 11 miles from Akpa.

Lipa, or Lipi (8,723 ft.), a long and wearisome march, 13 miles from Pângi.

L â b r a ng (9,296 ft.), on the right bank of the Sâtlej river, 7 miles from Lfpa; an easy stage —Tâpang—Cross the Rnnang pass (14,508 ft.).

Sicngnam, 31° 4G'; 78° 27'; 9,020 ft., a large • village, 11 miles from Lâbrang.

Route No. 41.

From CHIRGÂÛ (Simla) to BRUÂNG, or BÂRANG

(Kânâur).

A secondary route, passable for horses.

Chirgd•i; 31° 14'; 77° 52', near the confluence of the P6,bar and Andriti rivers (level of the confluence 5,607 ft.)—Continue along the right bank of the Pâbar river.

Pik a (7,720 ft.), an easy march — ChfngsvarCross the Sfpan river.

Jdnglik (9,257 ft.), 7 miles from Pika; a very easy march. • For the next two marches no villages are met with.

L i t i, 6 miles from Jânglik. Here is a kind of ruined bângalo. No provisions to be got here (Pika to Liti may easily be done in one march)—Cross the Burânda pass (15,296 ft).

Brudng, or Bdrang, 31° 28'; 78° 11'; 7,411 ft., a long stage.
