252. GUZ 743
Tripoli was born about 1220 at Tripoli in Syria. To supplement what has already been said about him by D'AVEZAC, IV, 406-407, and in Y, i, 23, I may add that he is named in the Registres d' Urbain IV, ed. T. GUIRAUD, II, 234, 236, 421, for the years Jan. 7, 1264 and July 17, 1264. His work De Statu Saracenorum has been published by H. PRUTZ, Kulturgesch. d. Kreuzzüge, 575-598; being dedicated to Gregory X when the future Pope was in Syria and was archdeacon of Liège, the work must have been written in 1271, and its presentation, in calling the attention of the future Pope to him as a man versed in Oriental problems, may have been one of the reasons why Gregory X appointed him as one of his envoys to Qubilai. Cf. also ALTANER, Die Dominikanermission, 85.
GUTIA

We perhaps ought to read « Gotia », but I do not see why « Gozia » is adopted in Bi, 411. In Schiltberger (ed. LANGMANTEL, 63, 97), « Sutti » and « Churin » are wrong readings for « *Kutti » and « Kuthia » (« Kuthia » is given in LANGMANTEL'S Ms. H). Plan Carpine speaks of the « Saxi quos nos credimus esse Gotos », but does not seem to place them in Crimea; Rubrouck, with his usual accuracy, mentions in Crimea « multi Goti quorum ydioma est teutonicum » (Wy, 137, 170). On these Goths of Crimea, cf. also, Y, II, 492. Simon de Saint-Quentin (in Vincent de Beauvais, xxxi, 149) writes « Guttia ».
GUZ
« Guz » is given in PAUTHIER'S edition as occurring in FA (Pa, 194), and this has been accepted by YULE ( Y, I, 263) ; but the word is not in FA. In Abn-'l Ghazi's description of the decimal organization of the Mongol army, the name of the century, yüz, « hundred » (in Turkish, not in Mongolian), has been altered in the old French version to « guz ». It is this corrupt « guz » which PAUTHIER introduced from Abn-'l Ghazi into his edition of Polo's text; but by an unfortunate misprint, the brackets, which ought to close after « guz », have been placed before, making « un millier : [un miny] ; guz, por centenier »; instead of « un millier : [un rainy; guz,] por centenier; ».
