Sous son successeur, Hien Foung, les insurgés T'ai P'ing, partis des provinces méridionales de la Chine, se dirigèrent vers le nord, portèrent la guerre et la désolation au coeur de l'empire, s'emparèrent de Nan king, s'avancèrent jusqu'à T'ien tsin et menacèrent Pe king, ébranlant un instant les assises mal assurées du trône mandchou. On trouvera l'histoire de cette terrible insurrection mieux peut-être dans les récits des étrangers que dans ceux des Chinois eux-mêmes. Le North China Herald, journal hebdomadaire publié à Chang hai, renferme une suite de narrations fort intéressantes et surtout des documents très importants traduits du chinois par le Dr. MEDHURST 5.
