Wells WILLIAMS avec son Middle Kingdom 3. qui, publié d'abord en 1848, est resté malgré quelques légères erreurs: et de nombreuses lacunes le livre le plus populaire et, somme toute, le plus complet. Il est tiré en grande partie du Chinese Repository, vaste recueil périodique formant vingt volumes, dont Bridgman et Williams furent les éditeurs 4.
Dans la. collection de Didot, l'Univers pittoresque, MM. PAUTHIER et BAZIN ont donné, sous le titre de Chine moderne 5, un ensemble de renseignements que l'on aurait peine à réunir. La partie historique de cet ouvrage a été traitée par M. Pauthier. L'Empire du Milieu s, de M. DE COURCY, n'offre rien d'original
