La relation de Jourdain de Séverac, ce dominicain qui a résidé à Tana de Salsette pendant deux ans et demi, à l'époque des quatre martyrs dont parle également ODORIC DE PORDENONE, n'avait jamais été publiée ni traduite en anglais ; elle n'avait jamais été l'objet que d'une remarque de la part de sir James Emerson Tennent, dans son livre sur Ceylan 1. L'ouvrage de Yule est le trentième des ouvrages (publié pour 1862) donnés par la Hakluyt Society, dont la magnifique série s'ouvre en 1847 2 par The Observations of Sir Richard Hawkins, knt., in his Voyage into the South Sea in 1593. La préface, datée de Gênes, 14 octobre 1863, dédiée au gouverneur de Bombay, Sir H. B. E. FRERE, K. C. B., contient ce passage caractéristique : « Till India becomes Christian there is no hope of real life and renovation. » Malgré des notes intéressantes, cette édition de Jourdain de Séverac ne fait pas oublier celle de Coquebert de Montbret, mais elle donne des espérances qui sont pleinement réalisées dans l'oeuvre suivante.
