j'ai donnés moi-même 1 ; le seul point faible de l'ouvrage est la bibliographie du second volume (page 522). Je m'étais permis d'écrire 2 à ce sujet : «Bibliographie peu digne d'un ouvrage si remarquable à tant d'égards. » Yule m'a répondu : « I see you give a just rebuke to the entire inadequacy of the bibliography (a name indeed not merited) in Marco Polo. I can only plead that it would have taken so long to achieve anything of the kind at Palermo that I did not entertain the idea. »
On aurait été tenté de croire que cette oeuvre monumentale, au moins en ce qui concerne la Chine, aurait pour longtemps vidé la question ; elle a été, au contraire, le point de départ de recherches nouvelles : le Très Révérend George Evans MOULE de la Church of England Missionary Society, à Hang-tcheou, Mr. George PHILLIPS 3, du service consulaire anglais, à Fou-tcheou, l'archimandrite PALLADIUS 4, mort à Marseille en 1878, pour le nord de la Chine, le Dr. Emil BRETSCHNEIDER 5, le savant
