THE THIRD" CROSSING OF THE KASHGAR RANGE.

24

we have to our right the mouth of Belden-jilga, and a little beyond it Toßchu-

muruna jilga. The next right tributary is Musde jilga, coming out at a widening

of the main valley called Kara-su. From here the Gäjek valley is for some distance a narrow gorge, where only very short and insignificant tributaries enter. At the point where Yanzan jilga opens from the left, the valley again suddenly becomes

broad. A little lower down we notice Kara-s ai J ilg a from the same side.

The valley then remains broad and open ; its brook had about half a cubic meter of water per second. The whole landscape was snow covered. There are bushes and grass. The road is good. The prevailing rock is black crystalline schist. To the

left we have the jilga of Arka-ierek and a little lower down to the right, Sanik-

kis. We rode up 3 km. to the aul of Sarik-kis in this valley. Looking south from

the aul we had to our left a little steep jilga with a path across the Yaphan-

davan to the valley of C humbus; to the right another little jilga with a road to

Kuru-bel and Gäjek-beles. Between both is a mighty massif.

The aul of Sarik -kis consisted of 5 tents and 2 0 persons of the Karateït tribe. They pass the winter here and go in summer to the upper yeilaks of their valley.

October 16th we travelled 3 km. north to the junction of Sarik-kis and the

Gäjek valley, and thence 3 6.s km. E. N. E. and N. E. to Igis-yar. The descent is I ,02 6 m. and the rate 1 :38.5. After 14.5 km. in the Gäjek valley we reach the junction with the Keng-kol, from which we followed the same road as before by

Igis yar-karaul to Igis-yar.

The three following days I only noted the time and principal names. October i 7th:

left Igis-yar at i 2.50 p. m., reached Aktam, a garden, at 2.58 p. m.; Shanas, a

village, at 3.45 p. m.; Teter, a large village, 4.30 p. m. and Tebes or Teves, a village, at 5.15 p. m. October 18th: left Tebes at 11.23 a. m., crossing several small branches and canals irrigating Teóes and several villages north of it ; at 1.28 we reached the

village of Yingis-kerik; at 2.15 p. m. we crossed a low ridge stretching eastwards

to Yangi-hisar which we now leave to our right; at 2.30 p. m. we reached the village of Ag-us north of the ridge: at 3 o'clock p. m. the village of Hergusa between

small detritus hills; and 6.30 p. m. Kone-sak a large village. Between Hergusa and

Kone-sak the country is very desolate. October i 9th: left Kone-sak at 9.45 a. m.;

at i 1.30 a. m. we crossed at Akio, a branch of the Khan-terek-su on a bridge; at

noon we reached Chahr-shanel on the Gez-su; at 1 o'clock p. m. Kosala; an hour

later we crossed the Gez-darya and 2.12 p. m. the Khan-arik; at 2.50 p. m. we reached

Tasgun; at 4.30 p• m. Yang-i-shahr and at 5.45 p. m. Kashgar. In these three days we covered 90 km. in all.
